Dr. Lonnie L. Howard began his tenure as President of Clover Park Technical College on Sept. 16, 2013. He brings more than 20 years of community college and tier-1 research university experience. He has a broad background in workforce development, academic affairs and student services. His progressive responsibility includes positions as a faculty member, department chair, academic researcher, educational consultant, associate vice president of instruction and executive director of the school of continuing and professional studies. Prior to this, Dr. Howard worked his way up from the shop floor to mid-level positions in business and industry and served with distinction as a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.
As the son of a sharecropper and as a first-generation student who required developmental education, Dr. Howard’s life was transformed by the two-year college mission. He believes in the American Dream (with hard work, integrity and education anyone can achieve success). He has earned an associate in applied science, an associate in general studies, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and a doctorate. He has also attended the Sloan-C Institute for emerging online leaders at Penn State University. Having once walked in the shoes of CPTC students, he is committed to ‘giving back’ to them by establishing an annual Presidential Scholarship of up to $4,000.
Dr. Howard enjoys being active in the local community, has been recognized for public service and is devoted to helping others. Most notably, as a single-parent, he adopted a 2-year old boy who had been abandoned. Now age 21, his son will be pursuing a master’s degree.
