Prior Learning Assessment

Prior learning — sometimes referred to as experiential learning — is the knowledge and skills gained through work and life experience, including both formal and informal education and training.

CPTC understands that students may come to the college with skills and knowledge acquired through work experience, some of which could meet regular credit course requirements. Identifying credit for prior learning can be accomplished by an assessment process conducted by qualified faculty and may result in a course or several courses being posted to your transcript.

Process to Receive Credit for Prior Learning

STUDENT

  1. Arrange your prior learning assessment with the program or course faculty.
    • This assessment may be a graded exam, portfolio review, or another assessment method determined by the faculty.
  2. Complete the student portion of the Request for Academic Credit for Prior Learning form.
  3. Pay the non-refundable assessment fee.
    • Fee for assessment services: $50 evaluation and $20 transcription fee, totaling $70 for each course for which prior learning credit is requested. Payment is made at Cashier, building 17, Lakewood Campus.
  4. Provide your form and payment receipt to the faculty prior to the day of your assessment.
    • The faculty will enter your assessment information on the form and submit the form for processing.
  5. An email confirmation will be sent to your student email account when the request has been processed.

FACULTY

  1. After the assessment, complete the faculty portion of the form and forward the completed form to the Enrollment Services Office or email to evaluator@cptc.edu. ACPL forms will not be accepted from students.
