Security

CPTC places students and staff at the center of all we do. The Security Department is committed to providing a safe and secure environment through the following services: campus patrol, parking/traffic enforcement, emergency response, incident investigation, lost and found management, basic first aid, escort services to or from your vehicle, battery boosts, building access, and the assignment of keys and alarm codes.

Our security officers are non-commissioned and the Lakewood Police Department has jurisdiction on our main campus in Lakewood and the Pierce County Sheriff's Department at the South Hill Campus.

What matters to us...
  • creating, maintaining, and protecting a culture of civility, safety, and respect for our institution
  • supporting our students in their career goals
  • the diversity of our college community
  • employing an equity and inclusivity mindset
  • recognizing that burdens and benefits aren’t distributed equally
  • embracing the unique perspectives, ideas, and contributions of our students and staff in order to increase our own knowledge

Inclement Weather

CPTC will use as many media channels as possible to broadcast alerts about changes to campus operations, including:

Sex Offender Notification

In accordance with the "Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act" of 2000, which amends the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, the Jeanne Clery Act, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the Clover Park Technical College Security Department provides information on Registered Level III Offenders that are currently attending classes. This act requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where law enforcement information provided by a State concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. It also requires sex offenders already required to register in a state to provide notice of each institution of higher education in that State at which the person is employed, carries a vocation, or is a student. In Washington state sex offenders who are enrolled in a public or private institution of higher education must also notify the local county sheriff immediately (RCW 9A.44.145).

Using this public information to threaten, intimidate or harass sex/kidnap offenders will not be tolerated. This abuse could potentially terminate our ability to release this important information to the public.

About Classification Levels

When an offender is released from custody and placed back to the community, the Washington State Department of Corrections Community Protection Unit evaluates the offender. They determine the risk classification level for the offender. This evaluation is based on a complex scoring and review process. Community safety is a primary factor in the process. The classification levels basically have the following meanings:

Level I

These offenders present the lowest possible risk to the community and their likelihood to re-offend is considered minimal. They normally have not exhibited predatory type characteristics and most have successfully participated or are participating in approved treatment programs. Many are first-time offenders.

Level II

These offenders present a moderate risk to the community and they have a higher likelihood of re-offending than the Level 1 offenders. They are considered a higher risk to re-offend, because of the nature of their previous crime(s) and lifestyle (drug and alcohol abuse and other criminal activity). Some have refused to participate or failed to complete approved treatment programs.

Level III

These offenders pose a potential high risk to the community and are a threat to re-offend if provided the opportunity. Most have prior sex crime convictions as well as other criminal convictions. Their lifestyles and choices place them in this classification. Some have predatory characteristics and may seek out victims. They may have refused or failed to complete approved treatment programs. Fewer than three percent of all registered sex offenders in Pierce County are classified as Level 3 offenders.

Clery Act

The issue of campus safety is of vital concern for students and their families in choosing an educational institution.

The Clery Act and Higher Education Act mandate safety and security-related requirements for institutions. Educational institutions must collect, classify and count crime statistics, issue campus alerts, issue emergency notifications, publish an annual security report, and submit crime statistics to the Department of Education.

There are additional requirements for institutions that maintain a campus security department or that have campus student housing.

Daily Crime Logs

CPTC’s daily crime logs for the most recent sixty-day period are available for inspection during business hours at the Safety Office. Those logs older than sixty days will be provided within two days of a request.

Crime Statistics

CPTC maintains statistics for both its Lakewood Campus and South Hill Campus. These statistics include 3 years of information about campus arrests, disciplinary referrals, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) offenses, and hate crimes.
